Investing.com — Memorial Day weekend is kicking off as a busy one for travel, as AAA projects that 42.3 million Americans will journey at least 50 miles from home – a 7% increase over last year’s figures.

An additional 2.7 million people will travel this year to mark the unofficial start of summer compared to 2022, signaling a robust season ahead.

Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said, “This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000 when AAA started tracking holiday travel.” Twidale added that more Americans are planning and booking trips earlier despite inflation concerns. “This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports.”

Air travel is expected to have a significant boost this Memorial Day weekend, with nearly 3.4 million travelers expected to fly to their destinations – an increase of 11% over last year. The holiday weekend will likely see air travel exceed pre-pandemic levels, as it is projected that there will be 170,000 more passengers (5.4% more) than in 2019. Despite high ticket prices, demand for flights continues to skyrocket, making this Memorial Day weekend potentially the busiest at airports since 2005.

Road trips are also on the rise this year, with a 6% increase over last year’s Memorial Day weekend. Travelers (NYSE:) are advised to expect crowded airports and busy roads during the holiday weekend, and to plan accordingly.
